WORLD CUP 2022 :- Ghana vs Uruguay Preview, Line Up, Match Info

GHANA VS URUGUAY

In the last round of the World Cup, Group H is preparing for a tough fight today.

Uruguay will face Ghana in the match at Al Janub Stadium at 8.30 PM IST.  If South Korea lose or draw against Portugal, a draw will be enough for Ghana to advance to the pre-quarters.  Meanwhile, if they beat Uruguay by more than two goals today and Portugal loses to South Korea, Ghana can move past Portugal on goal difference and move into first place.

But all that is very unlikely.  Uruguay, on the other hand, will be in for a life-and-death battle.  Defeat or failure will clear their path. Therefore, they can fight with all their might.  Ghana is currently second with 3 points from 2 matches and Uruguay is at the bottom with only one point.  It would be a great comeback for Uruguay if they beat Ghana today and reach the knockout stages.  At the same time, it will not be surprising if Ghana conquers Uruguay.

And Ghana has an old score to settle

Uruguay defeated Ghana in the 2010 World Cup.  Luis Suarez blocked a shot in the last minute of extra time, meaning Ghana's goal.  Ghana was awarded a penalty as the player was sent off after being shown a red card.  But Asamoah Gyan who took the kick wasted it.  Ghana then lost to Uruguay in a penalty shootout.  Today we can expect a fiery battle as Ghana goes to ask Uruguay to replace the memories of that day.

INSIGHTS

 1) The only other FIFA World Cup meeting between Ghana and Uruguay was the famous quarter-final in 2010 when Uruguay's Luis Suarez was sent off for a deliberate handball in a 1-1 draw, but Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty.  Uruguay progressed through the penalty shootout.

 2) Uruguay is unbeaten in a FIFA World Cup match against an African country (W2 D2) in all four meetings in the 21st century - 3-3 vs Senegal (2002), 3-0 vs South Africa (2010), 1-1 vs Ghana (2010), 1-0  vs Egypt (2018).

3) Ghana is looking to win their second World Cup in a row, having previously won in MD2 and MD3 in 2006 (against the Czech Republic and the USA).  A win here would see them reach the knockout rounds for the third time in four matches at the World Cup.

4) Uruguay is yet to score a single goal at the 2022 World Cup, failing 21 times.  The last South American team to go through an entire group stage without scoring was Peru in the second group stage in 1978.

5) After a 2-0 loss against Portugal, Uruguay will be looking to avoid losing two group-stage matches in one edition of the World Cup for the first time since 1974.
